Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic

Job Summary

Maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel power systems on construction equipment including dozers, skid loaders, dump trucks, excavators, and small engines. Test equipment following repair to ensure proper performance and compliance with operating specifications. Repair and replace damaged or worn parts using computerized diagnostic tools and calibration devices. Perform service documentation, order parts, and maintain the assigned service truck while ensuring work area cleanliness. Operate between the shop and job sites within a 70-mile radius of the Charlotte metro area, navigating to locations as project needs change. Monitor operations to ensure health and safety standards are met and comply with OSHA policies. Accept overtime assignments as required based on operational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of mechanical or automotive experience
  • Extensive knowledge of diesel engines, electronic controls, and computer based diagnostic systems
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics along with service manuals to help diagnose issues to be able to make repairs
  • Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards
  • Working knowledge of construction site safety, truck maintenance, and road safety regulations
  • Must be able to work with others to achieve company results
  • Have the ability to think critically to analyze information and make sound decisions
  • Effective communication with other mechanics, truck drivers and field personnel
  • Must have reliable transportation to be at work when scheduled
  • Must be able to travel
  • Must be able to lift, pull, and push up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to perform essential tasks in less than favorable conditions
  • Must own and maintain own set of tools and toolbox
  • Must wear proper attire at all times including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image
  • Continuous mental and visual attention is necessary to safely and effectively complete work tasks
  • Must be able to navigate to job sites and material sources in a timely manner
  • Must maintain attendance at work, including presence at work during regular work hours or other schedules as may be assigned
  • Acceptance of overtime assignments will also be required based on operational needs
  • Must be able to perform repairs and maintenance in the field and shop settings
  • Must be able to effectively lead and coach others

Desired Qualifications

  • CDL Class A license a plus
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred
