Job Summary
Head of Ophthalmology Precision Medicine and Medical Director (MD) leading the new Ophthalmology Precision Medicine function at Roche in Welwyn. Build and direct a cross-functional team spanning biomarker science, advanced imaging (OCT, OCT-A, FA), clinical science, data science, and AI to integrate biomarker strategies across retinal diseases (neovascular AMD, diabetic macular edema, geographic atrophy, intermediate AMD). Shape scientific direction, influence portfolio strategy, and bridge laboratory science with clinical practice to enable translational insights and inform future clinical practice and therapeutic development. Represent Roche externally, establish partnerships with experts and the ophthalmology community, and drive cutting-edge imaging approaches while enabling translational insights through AI and data integration. You are a board-certified ophthalmologist with deep expertise in retina and imaging, capable of leading a cross-functional team, driving strategy, and contributing to clinical development and drug discovery in retinal diseases. Flexible working arrangements may be available for exceptional candidates who wish to maintain some clinical activity alongside this role.
Required Qualifications
- board-certified ophthalmologist (MD or MD/PhD) with deep expertise in ophthalmology, translational medicine, or biomedical sciences
- recognised expert in the retina space with strong scientific publication record
- deep knowledge of ophthalmic imaging technologies (OCT, OCT-A, FA) and experience with imaging analysis or Reading Centre environments
- experience in integrating preclinical and clinical data to support proof of biology, efficacy, and safety strategies, with some exposure to clinical trials
- collaborative scientific leader who thrives in matrix environments and is energised by innovation and building something new
- preferred experience applying AI or machine learning to ophthalmic imaging analysis or clinical data interpretation
- prior experience in pharmaceutical drug development programmes for retinal diseases
- flexible working arrangements may be available to maintain some clinical activity alongside the role
