Head of Technical Accounting

Job Summary
Partner with senior Finance leaders, commercial teams, and external auditors to provide authoritative guidance on complex transactions, acquisitions, and evolving accounting standards. Establish best practice across a global group and build a technical accounting function supporting growth plans in the energy sector. Apply expert knowledge of IFRS 9, IFRS 13, and IFRS 3 to drive consistent standards while influencing key business decisions. This role requires a qualified ACA with significant post-qualified experience in technical accounting or group reporting, ideally within the energy, utilities, or commodity trading sectors. The position is based in the UK with offices in the US and Australia, offering flexible working up to 30 days a year.
Required Qualifications
- Qualified ACA (or equivalent)
- background in Big 4 audit or advisory
- significant post-qualified experience in a senior technical accounting, group reporting, or similar leadership role
- Expert knowledge of IFRS, particularly IFRS 9, IFRS 13 and IFRS 3
- proven experience applying complex accounting standards
- Experience within the energy, utilities or commodity trading sector
- strong understanding of financial instruments, commodity contracts, fair value accounting, and the sector-specific accounting challenges these present
- Excellent management and communication skills
- ability to influence senior leaders
- ability to prepare robust technical accounting papers and policies
- ability to lead discussions with external auditors
- ability to drive consistent accounting standards across a global organisation
