Job Summary
Head of Health & Safety role leading the company’s health, safety and environmental agenda. Senior advisory to Directors on audit, risk and governance; coordination of compliance across Projects, Commercial, HR, Mechanical, Electrical, Building, Fire and Security; development and delivery of training, and management of the Integrated Management System (IMS) for ISO certifications. Works with Head of ESG and key stakeholders to drive safety culture, quality planning, reporting, and continuous improvement; oversees investigations, governance, and regulatory compliance, and represents the company in a professional manner while supporting multi-site operations and travel to sites.
Required Qualifications
- Recognised industry relevant health and safety qualifications e.g. NEBOSH general certificate, Construction and/or fire safety
- Accredited by a recognised industry body e.g. IOSH to at least Certified Level with full CPD records
- Extensive experience of supporting and advising Board and senior management on audit, risk and governance matters gained within a regulated environment
- Experience and understanding of complex investigations, including working with government agencies e.g. the Health and Safety Executive
- Proven experience in the design and delivery of quality management systems and third-party accreditations
- A track record of design and delivery of professional, technical and industry recognised training programmes
- Proven experience (more than 5 years) in the application of the Construction (Design and Management) Regs 2015 as part of project delivery
- Lead Auditor qualifications relevant to 9001, 14001 and/or 45001 standards
- Competence in BSA2022 dutyholder roles (Principal Designer / Contractor)
- Integration of reactive maintenance risk into H&S strategy
- Solid understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental regulations, monitoring and reporting
- Strong understanding of governance and compliance issues within a complex organisation
- An up to date understanding of regulatory requirements in the construction industry
- Detailed understanding of the requirements of ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001
- Comprehensive understanding of how to deliver effective training to a range of audiences
- Knowledge of BS7671 and the role of NICEIC in conducting assessments
- Understanding of how to implement construction techniques in small to medium sized businesses
- Understanding of how to implement workforce development e.g. skills and competency matrices across multiple professions and how to shape recruitment policy in conjunction with human resources professionals
- Awareness of GDPR and data security requirements and how to design and implement relevant policy/procedures
- Oversight of Golden Thread information
- Liaison with Accountable Persons / Building Safety Regulator
- Oversight of housing health risks (HHSRS, damp/mould frameworks)
- Excellent levels of verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent track record of building effective teams, forming positive and motivational relationships
- Ability to influence and negotiate positive outcomes with senior managers, supervisors, operatives and third parties
- Excellent research and reporting skills, able to analyse complex information and present it in an accessible way
- Ability to maintain accurate records and use a range of digital packages to communicate strategic and operational information
- Excellent planning and organisational skills
- The ability to work in high security environments
- The ability to travel to a range of sites
- Appreciation that there might be out of hours working, agreed in advance
