Job Summary
Own financial planning and analysis, including the operating model, annual budget, forecasting, and cash runway management. Build and run core finance operations: monthly close, GAAP financial statements, internal controls, and vendor relationships. Manage insurance-specific finance, including premium and claims accounting, while tracking and reporting key insurance metrics. Support and execute on the company's financial strategy in partnership with the CEO, preparing board materials and investor updates for fundraising workstreams. Hire and develop the finance team as the company grows. This role establishes the financial foundation for Sola, a weather data-driven insurance startup with 400%+ growth, to scale operations without losing rigor. You will work directly with leadership to shape the finance function in a flat, 22-person organization.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of progressive finance experience
- leadership experience (Head of Finance, Finance Director, Controller, or similar)
- direct insurance industry experience at a carrier, MGA/MGU, insurtech, reinsurer, or broker
- ability to operate hands-on in an early-stage environment without needing a large team around you
- Strong knowledge of insurance finance, including premium and claims accounting, reserving, and loss and combined ratios
- Strong FP&A skills, including building operating models and leading budgeting and forecasting processes
- Experience owning a monthly close and producing GAAP financial statements
Desired Qualifications
- CPA or MBA preferred
- Experience at a venture-backed startup, ideally through one or more fundraising rounds, preferred
- Experience implementing finance systems and controls preferred
