Job Summary
Head of Development for the Documentary Unit to lead a strategic slate, drive business growth, and win commissions across UK and US markets. Responsible for providing editorial direction to a development team, shaping premium factual ideas from concept to commission, crafting decks and sizzles for broadcasters/streamers, and maintaining strong relationships with documentary commissioners. Requires senior leadership, a proven track record in securing commissions with UK/US broadcasters and streamers (Netflix, Apple, Disney, Amazon, Nat Geo), and the ability to manage cross-departmental teams while advocating for diversity and creative excellence in both terrestrial and streamer markets. Contract is fixed-term (six months, full-time) with potential extension, based in London at BBC Studios Documentary Unit, with flexible working discussed at offer stage.
Required Qualifications
- Senior-level experience in documentary development and production
- Proven ability to secure commissions in UK and US markets
- Strong writer and presenter of ideas; ability to pitch to broadcasters/streamers
- Experience leading development teams and managing budgets
- Editorial judgement in fast-moving environments
- Ability to build and manage relationships with commissioners (UK/US)
