Job Summary
Head of Competitive Intelligence leads strategy, standards, and operating model for competitive intelligence across Ionis’ portfolio, serving as a senior cross-functional partner to Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, R&D, and others. Responsible for translating competitive insights into clear implications and actionable recommendations for senior leadership, driving readiness across programs, and building scalable CI capabilities, processes, and tools (including AI-enabled approaches). Will lead external partner selection and oversight, ensure compliance with laws and company policy, manage budgeting and team development, and travel internationally (~20%). Must synthesize complex signals, pressure-test assumptions, and influence decisions across the organization to shape portfolio strategy, development, launch, and commercialization decisions. Reports to the Head of Insights and collaborates with multiple functions to deliver timely, objective insights across the product lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- 15+ years of relevant experience in pharma or biotech including competitive intelligence, market insights, strategy, commercial, medical, R&D and/or investor relations; OR 12+ years with a master's; OR 8+ years with a PhD
- Bachelor’s degree required; PhD or other advanced degree preferred
- Demonstrated leadership with cross-functional exposure
- Deep experience with competitive intelligence approaches, tools, platforms, and monitoring across the product lifecycle
- U.S. launch experience required; global experience preferred
- Experience in neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, immunology or similarly complex specialty categories preferred
- Strong communication skills; ability to influence senior stakeholders
- Experience building capabilities, frameworks, and scalable processes; familiarity with digital and AI-enabled approaches
- High learning agility and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to travel internationally (approximately 20%)
