Job Summary
Head JV Women's Basketball Coach at a North Carolina school is responsible for providing coaching expertise and guidance to student-athletes throughout the basketball season, teaching proper techniques, enforcing athletic policies, and modeling good sportsmanship. The role reports to the Athletic Director and requires supervising staff as applicable, coordinating scheduling for practices and games, ensuring safety and compliance with state and federal requirements, coordinating with the broader athletic program, and supporting student academic eligibility. Responsibilities include implementing and enforcing policies, organizing conferences and staff meetings, designing coaching curricula, supervising discipline and due process, arranging transportation and tournament logistics, maintaining equipment and facilities, and collaborating with the Athletic Director and Chief Communications Officer to communicate with the public and media. Minimum qualifications include thorough knowledge of athletic policies, regulations, safety practices, and eligibility processes; preferred qualifications include an Associate’s Degree in Physical Education or related area and at least three years of coaching experience at the middle or high school level; valid NC driver’s license is required. The work week is Monday–Friday with evenings and some weekends, and hours vary by sport season.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies approved by the Board of Education
- Comprehensive knowledge of the existing system, state, and conference regulations
- Thorough understanding of the proper administrative line of command
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques associated with the athletic program
- Thorough knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility for athletic participation
- Thorough knowledge of training rules and any other unique regulations about the various sports in which athletes are engaged
- Thorough knowledge of guidance and safeguards in place for the safety of athletes to address medical injuries and emergencies
- Thorough knowledge of the process for initiating policies and procedures applicable to the athletic program
- Additional course work and/or training in Physical Education or a particular sport
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
Desired Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Physical Education or related area
- Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience at the middle or high school level
- Responsible for the implementation and enforcement by the entire staff of the sports program's Athletic Policies
- Implement, interpret, and enforce consistently existing school system, state, and conference regulations
- Refer all requests for grievances through proper channels
- Attend all public/staff/departmental meetings for which attendance is required
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for a particular sport to be taught by staff
- Design conferences, training clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program
- Encourage professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local clinic policy
- Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation
- Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, providing transportation, and meeting the requirements for the tournament and special sports events
- Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
- Coordinate sports events and practices with maintenance and school employees
- Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility
