Job Summary
Develop student-athletes through safe and effective drills, skills, strategies, and lesson planning while supervising practice and competition environments to maintain safety. Recruit, train, and oversee all coaches in the Kayaking program, and collaborate with the Athletic Department to maintain a competitive and well-rounded program. Track daily attendance, monitor athlete eligibility per Mid-Pacific, ILH, and HHSAA regulations, and maintain all equipment. Conduct a parent meeting prior to the start of the season and communicate practice schedules and updates to athletes and parents. Serve as a positive role model, mentor student-athletes, and address hazards or unsafe behaviors promptly. This is a temporary, seasonal position concluding at the end of the Kayaking season, requiring fewer than 20 hours per week during the season.
Required Qualifications
- Must hold or be willing to obtain valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification
- Regular and predictable attendance at work is essential
- The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, paddle, bend, reach, squat, kneel, twist, push, pull, and lift while coaching and supervising student-athletes in a marine environment
- The position requires the ability to lift, carry, load, unload, and transport kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices (PFDs), and other equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds, with or without assistance
- The employee must be able to enter and exit watercraft, assist student-athletes on and off the water, and safely participate in water-based activities
- The employee must possess sufficient near and distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing, and communication skills to supervise student-athletes in and around the water, recognize potential hazards, monitor changing water and weather conditions, and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
- The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor environmental conditions, including sun, heat, humidity, wind, rain, and water
- On a daily basis, must consistently problem-solve, make informed decisions, interpret data, organize effectively, communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, and engage in thoughtful planning
- Uses equipment typical of a kayaking program, including kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices (PFDs), safety and rescue equipment, boat racks, trailers, and related training equipment
- Operates standard office equipment and technology, including computers, tablets, email, and Google Workspace applications for communication, scheduling, and recordkeeping
- The employee is regularly exposed to varying weather and environmental conditions, including sun, heat, humidity, wind, rain, water, loud noise, cold, and hot temperatures
- Work may involve launching, loading, transporting, and storing kayaks and equipment, as well as supervising student-athletes in and around open water
- Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources

- Preferred: Proven experience as a successful and motivating head coach with excellent communication skills
