Head Coach - Judo (Sensei)

Job Summary

Develop student-athletes through safe and effective drills, skills, strategies, and lesson planning while motivating them with positive reinforcement. Supervise staff, recruit and train assistant coaches, and collaborate with the Athletic Department to maintain a competitive middle and high school program. Track daily attendance, monitor athlete eligibility per Mid-Pacific, ILH, and HHSAA regulations, and maintain all equipment and uniforms. Conduct pre-season parent meetings, share practice schedules, and respond promptly to athlete or parent concerns. Serve as a positive role model, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and address social and emotional needs. Comply with all safety rules, report injuries to the Athletic Trainer, and manage hazards during practice and competition environments. This temporary seasonal position requires fewer than 20 hours per week and concludes at the end of the Judo seasons.

Required Qualifications

  • Must hold or be willing to obtain valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, move, and set up judo mats and other training equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds, with or without assistance.
  • Must possess sufficient near and distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing, and communication skills to supervise student-athletes, recognize potential safety hazards, provide instruction, and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate judo techniques, safely assist and spot student-athletes during instruction, and participate in training activities as appropriate.
  • Must be well organized, able to meet deadlines, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must consistently problem-solve, make informed decisions, interpret data, organize effectively, communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, and engage in thoughtful planning.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with the Athletic Department, coaching staff, maintenance staff, faculty/staff, student-athletes, parents, and other members of the Mid-Pacific athletic community.
  • Must be a positive role model in our community and possess the highest level of sportsman-like behavior at all times.
  • Must comply with all Mid-Pacific, ILH, IJF and HHSAA rules and regulations.
  • Must be able to conduct a parent meeting prior to the start of the season.
  • Must be able to share practice schedules and updates with athletes in a timely and organized manner.
  • Must be able to respond positively and promptly to parent or athlete concerns.
  • Must be able to track daily attendance and communicate with student-athletes and parents regarding absences.
  • Must be able to monitor athlete eligibility per Mid-Pacific, ILH, and HHSAA regulations.
  • Must be able to maintain and secure all equipment; report any broken or unsafe items to the Athletic Department.
  • Must be able to assist with issuing and returning team uniforms and equipment.
  • Must be able to monitor academic performance to support student success.
  • Must be able to communicate team equipment and supply needs to the Athletic Department.
  • Must be able to clearly articulate the vision and scope of the Judo program.
  • Must be able to supervise the practice and competition environments to maintain safety.
  • Must be able to identify and address hazards or unsafe behaviors.
  • Must be able to report injuries promptly to the Athletic Trainer.
  • Must be able to follow the Mid-Pacific Athletics Emergency Action Plan during emergencies.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at work is essential.
  • Must be able to participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Must be able to comply with the instructions given for their own safety and health and that of others, in adhering to safe work procedures.
  • Must take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and health and that of others.
  • Must be able to report any injury, hazard or illness immediately, to the Athletic Department.
  • Must not place others at risk by any act or omission, not willfully or recklessly interfere with safety equipment.
  • Must be able to act as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.
  • Must be able to identify, assess if necessary, and control hazards within the area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to ensure that equipment/supplies are properly maintained.
  • Must maintain relevant knowledge of safety laws.
  • Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources. Sexual abuse includes child molestation, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with a minor, and serial sexual misconduct, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with more than one victim; and committed by or alleged to have been committed by any perpetrator who is not a student of an included entity.
  • Must be able to use equipment typical of a judo program, including training mats, protective equipment, uniforms, first aid and emergency response equipment, and other coaching and training aids.
  • Must be able to utilize computers, tablets, email, Google Workspace applications, and other technology for communication, scheduling, recordkeeping, and program administration.
  • Must be able to operate School vehicles to transport equipment or travel to practices and competitions, if authorized.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, squat, kneel, twist, push, pull, balance, and use hands and arms while coaching and supervising student-athletes during practices and competitions.
  • Must be able to work indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions during practices, competitions, and School events.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a successful and motivating head coach with excellent communication skills.
