Job Summary
Implement athletic policies and regulations while supervising a staff of middle school coaches and managing equipment facilities. Design conferences and clinics to train assistants, maintain discipline, and evaluate staff effectiveness at season's end. Serve as a mentor to student athletes by monitoring grades, conduct, and safety during practices and travel, while promoting good sportsmanship and mental health. Manage public relations with media, parents, and boosters to promote the sport within and outside the school.
Required Qualifications
- Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program
- Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport
- Ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field
- Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes
- Thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Rowan Salisbury Schools Board of Education
- Knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations
- Understanding of the proper administrative line of command
- Awareness of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance
- Ability to establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants
- Ability to design conferences, clinics and staff meetings
- Ability to train and inform staff
- Ability to encourage professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance
- Ability to delegate specific duties
- Ability to supervise implementation
- Ability to analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants at season's end
- Ability to maintain discipline
- Ability to adjust grievances
- Ability to increase morale and cooperation
- Ability to provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites
- Ability to advise the head coach and recommend policy, method or procedural changes
- Ability to serve as a mentor to each athlete
- Ability to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship
- Ability to give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct
- Ability to provide assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant by presence at all practices games and while traveling
- Ability to provide training rules, schedule, calendar, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete (and their parents)
- Ability to follow programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies
- Ability to direct student managers, assistants and statisticians
- Ability to assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection
- Accountability for all equipment
- Ability to properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing
- Ability to monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices
- Ability to authorize who may enter, issue or requisition equipment
- Ability to permit athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times
- Ability to examine locker rooms before and after practices and games
- Ability to check on general cleanliness of the facility
- Ability to be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and facility used
- Ability to instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use
- Ability to promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program
- Ability to promote the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or in any other feasible manner
- Ability to maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans
Desired Qualifications
- Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (preferable)
