Harm Reduction Specialist

Job Summary

Conduct initial health assessments and provide risk reduction interventions for clients, while navigating the medical system to coordinate care and assist with appointments. Maintain routine communication to track client progress, facilitate group services on wellness and overdose prevention, and complete timely documentation and database entries. Build relationships to locate resources and promote recovery, independence, and health for service users. This role supports Housing Works' mission to ensure access to quality healthcare and harm reduction services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma
  • New York City Department of Health Peer Certificate Training or the ability to obtain certificate through attendance at an AIDS Institute Authorized training center
  • Ability to make data entries into programs database such as AIRS, e-Share, EiCare
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience providing care navigation services
  • Preferable training in HIV 101
  • Preferable training in Viral Hepatitis 101
  • Preferable training in Motivational Interviewing
  • Preferable training in LGBT Sensitivity
  • Preferable training in Syringe Exchange and Harm Reduction Training
  • Preferable training in HIV confidentiality and risk-reduction counseling
  • Preferable training in Deescalation
  • Culturally aware and sensitive to PWUD (People Who Use Drugs), PLWHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS), LGBTQAI, YIDU (Young Intravenous Drug Users), SMI (Severe Mental Illness), and MSM (Men who have Sex with Men)
  • Good group facilitation skills
  • overdose prevention training experience
  • Skilled with health insurance navigation and documentation
  • Good verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Use of computer software --Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Outlook calendaring, and Excel
  • Frequently remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Occasionally moving around to additional worksites
  • Occasionally lifting and moving objects up to 25 pounds in ordinary office related tasks
