Job Summary
Harbor Patrol is responsible for ensuring safe operations and assisting boaters on and off moorings across Catalina Island's west-end, including monitoring mooring fields, responding to emergencies, conducting vessel inspections, assisting with mooring assignments, dispensing fuel and water, handling lines for ferries, and communicating policies and events to guests. The role requires strong customer service, navigation knowledge, radio communication, and the ability to operate harbor vessels under varied weather conditions during a seasonal schedule (April-October). Housing is available as a subsidized option; live-aboard arrangements may be considered. The pay is $23.75 per hour and candidates must meet pre-employment background and drug testing requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED
- Boat handling experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Pass pre-employment background and drug tests, including random drug tests throughout employment
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Live aboard boaters preferred
- Computer / tablet proficiency
- California Boaters Card upon hire
- ABCs of California Boating and USCG navigation rules
- Safely operate a Patrol vessel in the harbor, coastal waterways, and close quarter mooring fields, including maintaining a holding pattern alongside other vessel
- Use VHF radio, tablet, and electronic charts to navigate and communicate effectively
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills, exercising tact, judgment, maturity, and clear communication
- Tow vessels on hip and stern, and understand and enforce relevant laws, regulations, and policies
- Operate, maintain, and use harbor vessels and equipment effectively, including proper vessel tie-ups and knot tying
- Pass background and drug tests
- SCHEDULE flexible with rotating weekday and weekend shifts
