Job Summary
Independent Contractor for Haitian Creole translation/interpretation to support DOJ Language Support Services. Responsibilities include translating documents and electronic/media content, transcription, and court/deposition interpretation across legal, medical, financial, and other technical materials. Must handle sensitive information with strict confidentiality, maintain tone/register, and use CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio). Requirements include at least 2 years of translation experience, ILR 3 or equivalent, U.S. citizenship, 1 year experience with law enforcement/legal environments, bilingual proficiency in English and Haitian Creole, and eligibility for Active Public Trust or higher clearance. Remote work available with National Capital Region/CONUS locations; some travel may be required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of translation experience
- Qualifying ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S.
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Haitian Creole (formal, diplomatic, casual contexts)
- Knowledge of specialized vocabulary in English and Haitian Creole related to government missions
- Fluent writing in native language with professional command in non-native language
- Translate preserving tone and register; no changes, omissions, or additions
- Adhere to linguist ethics; confidentiality measures in place
- Proficient with CAT tools, SDL Trados Studio
- Active Public Trust or higher security clearance (required)
