Job Summary
Independent Contractor role for Haitian Creole Translation, Review, Editor and Certifier supporting the Department of Justice’s LSS. Duties include translating documents and multimedia content in legal, government, and technical domains, plus transcription and interpretation (court/deposition). Must maintain confidentiality for sensitive materials, ensure terminology accuracy across legal, medical, financial, and other specialized areas, and preserve original tone and register. Proficiency with CAT tools (notably SDL Trados Studio) and strong English skill required. Location options include remote work and National Capital Region / CONUS locations; some travel may be needed. Must be a U.S. citizen with ILR 4 level or equivalent and at least five years of relevant experience in Haitian Creole translation/editing, plus one year of experience in law enforcement or legal environments.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Haitian Creole translation/editing in the past ten years
- Superior English and editing skills
- ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S.
- At least 1 year of experience with a law enforcement or legal department
- U.S. citizen
- Native fluency in Haitian Creole with professional command of the non-native language
- Translate with factual and conceptual accuracy preserving tone and register
- Proficiency in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, SDL Trados Studio
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality
- Experience handling legal/technical terminology across multiple subject areas
- Ability to work as Independent Contractor
- Travel may be required
