Job Summary
_Group Exercise Instructor_ responsibilities include delivering safe, effective and engaging group exercise classes under the supervision of the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director, maintaining a clean and safe workout space, following YMCA safety guidelines, and supporting branch activities. The role involves teaching, supervising participants through warm-up, cardio, strength and flexibility components, demonstrating modifications, ensuring timely class starts, arranging substitutes when needed, promoting healthy lifestyles, developing member relations, and increasing exposure to non-members. The position requires current CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/First Aid certifications, ongoing national certification from approved agencies (e.g., ACSM, ACE, AFAA, AFPA, ISSA, NASM, NSCA, WITS, YMCA Foundations of Group Fitness, Cooper Institute, NESTA, ISCA, FiTOUR), a willingness to teach at least one regular class per week, and the ability to maintain certifications with copies provided yearly. Strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to substitute teach for other instructors are essential.
Required Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- Current CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/First Aid certifications
- Experience in teaching group exercise classes
- Must hold a current national certification from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, AFPA, ISSA, NASM, NSCA, WITS, YMCA Foundations of Group Fitness, Cooper Institute, NESTA, ISCA, and/or FiTOUR or a Bachelor’s Degree in fitness related field
- Must maintain nationally recognized certification in the type of class you are teaching
- Must be willing to teach a minimum of one regular scheduled group exercise classes per week
- Must maintain all appropriate certifications and provide copies of all certifications and required CEC’s to fitness director or branch director each year
- Excellent human relations and communication skills
- Team player (be willing to substitute teach for other instructors)
