Job Summary
Plan, develop, adapt, and teach group exercise classes for the Health & Wellness Department, maintaining safe, effective, and accessible routines for all members. Welcome participants, track attendance records, and motivate individuals to perform their best while observing class needs to provide meaningful feedback. Enforce facility policies to ensure safety, instruct members on exertion levels and breathing techniques, and respond professionally to injuries or emergencies. Demonstrate the YMCA's Four Character Development Principles through interactions with staff, members, and the public. Interpret mission objectives and programs during activities, trainings, and meetings.
Required Qualifications
- At least 18 years of age
- Group Fitness Instructor Certification from one or more of the following: AFAA (with certification prior to October 2023), ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, or other nationally recognized through NCCA, tested, and renewal required certification
- If only teaching Yoga, must be registered with RYA
- Completes YMCA required trainings upon hire
- Able to respond professionally and swiftly in cases of injuries and emergencies
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision
- The employee is regularly required to bend, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, and move from sitting to standing positions
- The employee is regularly required to maintain alertness for several hours at a time
- The employee is regularly exposed to communicable diseases, thus engaging in frequent handwashing, and sanitizing of equipment
- The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds
- The employee is regularly required to communicate with participants using oral comprehension and expression, as well as active listening as speech recognition
- The employee must be prepared to respond to emergencies on the Health and Wellness floor
Desired Qualifications
- Six months to one year experience leading group exercise classes preferred
