Job Summary
The Group Exercise Instructor I is responsible for conducting YMCA exercise classes on land and/or water, ensuring classes run smoothly and safely for all participants. Duties include appropriate music selection, maintaining certifications, attending staff meetings, and logging class attendance. Candidates must possess knowledge in fitness issues, effective communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks independently. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with CPR/AED certification. Instructors must obtain and maintain relevant YMCA and external certifications specific to their teaching focus.
Required Qualifications
- High School or GED degree
- At least 18 years of age or older
- Less than one year of experience in teaching group exercise classes or one or more years of group exercise participation
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check
Desired Qualifications
- YMCA/ACE online Group Exercise Instructor Certification (or equivalency)
- YMCA Strength and Conditioning Instructor Certification (if teaching strength and conditioning)
- YMCA/AEA online certification and supplemental courses (for water instructors)
- Specialty Certifications (e.g., Y-Metro Atlanta Pilates, Group Cycling, Active Older Adult)
- Outside certifications approved by Metro Atlanta Y (e.g., TRX, Barre, Zumba, Pound)
