Grounds Maintenance Worker

Job Summary

Maintain landscaped areas including lawns, bushes, trees, and flowers through planting, watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, renovating, fertilizing, and pruning. Operate motorized equipment such as fork lifts, skid steer loaders, backhoes, tractors, and various mowers while inspecting school grounds to remove debris that poses safety hazards. Transport rubbish to the landfill, assist in applying herbicides and pesticides safely, and maintain records of chemical usage. Support athletic field repairs, irrigation system fixes, concrete work, and playground equipment installation. Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to job sites, ensuring compliance with traffic laws and maintaining the vehicle in serviceable condition. Perform related work as assigned under the direction of the Maintenance Operations Supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of six (6) months of ground-related experience
  • Knowledge of basic equipment and methods of grounds maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of grounds maintenance tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Working knowledge of ADA requirements and detention pond repair and maintenance
  • Ability to learn methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the preparation and maintenance of landscaped grounds
  • Ability to learn methods and techniques used in the application of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
  • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools or equipment related to grounds maintenance
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
  • Ability to Safely operate motorized equipment including but not limited to fork lifts, skid steer loaders, backhoes, tractors, bush hog, finishing mowers, reel mowers, riding mowers and push mowers
