Job Summary
Guide inbound and outbound airplanes to and from the gate while operating heavy equipment such as pushback tugs, belt loaders, and lift trucks. Transport, lift, load, and unload passenger baggage, cargo, and mail material safely, safeguarding items from weather, loss, theft, or damage. Clean aircraft passenger cabins between flights, stock supplies, refill water tanks, and lavatories, and tow planes between gates. Receive and record customer baggage, air freight, and mail, preparing records and entering data into company systems as required. Complete all necessary paperwork, forms, and training while following strict safety protocols and reporting hazards to supervisors. Work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, maintaining physical stamina to lift items weighing up to 70 pounds regularly.
Required Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a high school diploma, GED, or work experience equivalent
- Possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- If work location is in the United States, must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
- If work location is in Canada, must have authorization to work in Canada as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) of 2001
- Must complete ramp and SIDA training to obtain airport authority identification security
- If required by customer or role access, be able to secure a Customs Seal through the respective governing agency
- Must be able to lift / carry / push / pull and move items 70 pounds (32 kg) or more on a regular basis and repetitively lift items weighing 40 to 50 pounds on raised surfaces
- Must be able to carry heavy items up and down narrow jetway stairs
- Must be able to walk, climb, bend, kneel, crawl, and stoop on a frequent basis and for extended periods
- Must be able to work in cramped or high places
- Must be able to be alerted to moving vehicles or aircraft and use radio equipment to communicate with crew and airport authorities
- Must be able to work outside in all types of weather, around jet and machinery noises
- Be willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Good Communication Skills – Ramp Agents must be able to communicate information and instructions verbally and/or via radio equipment effectively in a professional manner with the flight crew, gate agents, and other ground crew to coordinate the movement and handling of planes, equipment, baggage, and cargo
- Basic math skills: Ramp agents may be required to calculate weight and balance calculations for planes
- Computer skills: Ramp agents may be required to use computer systems to track cargo and baggage
- Problem-solving skills: Ramp agents may be called upon to troubleshoot issues during loading and unloading
- Time management skills: Ramp agents must be able to manage their time effectively to complete tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment
