Job Summary
Perform gross examinations, dissection, and description of tissues received from surgical procedures under the direct supervision of an Anatomic Pathologist. Ensure proper labeling of all specimens, troubleshoot discrepancies, and assist with frozen sections and fresh tissue triage. Trans and educate laboratory personnel and residents in processing surgical tissues and post-mortem examinations, while collecting and summarizing quality assurance data for reporting. Maintain the autopsy database, catalog evidence, and communicate with funeral homes regarding body disposition. Participate in developing and maintaining surgical pathology protocols, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws and accreditation standards.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
- Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
- Have at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum include: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses
- Have at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum include: 14 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, AND 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology
- Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program
- Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: at least 3 months of documented laboratory training in pathology / histology or cytology
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard
- Demonstrates knowledge of quality, safety and compliance programs and ensures that these principles are applied in the Gross lab
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage stress in order to process a large volume of specimens effectively
- Ability to work in a controlled environment with exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, etc
- Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects
- occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force
