Job Summary

Grossing Technician I performs tissue description, dissection, and sectioning for diagnostic evaluation of small skin specimens (shaves, punches, excisions) and supports histology-related duties per SOPs. Responsibilities include reviewing specimens for completeness and accuracy (including site and patient ID), selecting processing times, troubleshooting technical issues, performing maintenance and quality control on instruments, maintaining a safe workspace, and supporting quality control/assurance programs. Role requires completion of an ABHES/CAHEA-approved clinical laboratory training or equivalent (60 semester hours with relevant coursework) and/or 3 months of documented lab training in high-complexity testing, with competency assessments after hire and annually. On-the-job responsibilities expand to embedding, microtomy, slide filing, and occasional travel up to 25%. Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology (or equivalent with 60 semester hours including chemistry/biology coursework) required. The position offers full-time schedule (Mon-Fri, 8:00am–4:30pm) with benefits noted, and emphasizes growth opportunities within Schweiger’s dermatology pathology operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, CAHEA, or other HHS-approved organization (training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in education requirements) OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty for high-complexity testing.
  • Post-training competency assessment after hire; competency assessment occurs at one month before independent work.
  • Six months of prior work experience is desired to gain familiarity with grossing techniques; experience in a large-scale or high-volume production environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with major staining techniques and general analysis of tissue specimens.
  • Ability to perform tissue description, dissection, and sectioning; ensure site and patient identification; monitor processing times; troubleshoot technical problems; perform maintenance and quality control on instruments; maintain a safe working environment.
  • 12 hours of continuing education per year per the laboratory's Continuing Education SOP.
