GIS Support and Dig Permit Specialist

Job Summary

Review, complete, and process contractor digging permit requests per MSFC Digging Permits AS20‐OI‐012, including preparation and interpretation of UG/OH utility drawings. Maintain and update the Underground Utilities Database and local GIS/utility data in Bentley Map format, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Esri ArcGIS. Provide local GIS support for construction and CoF projects, including underground mapping/marking of known and unknown utilities and updates to the Basic Map System. Perform non-invasive field investigations using GPR, concrete scanners, magnetometers, or MetroTech to confirm and paint-mark utilities. Conduct land and construction surveying using conventional, GPS, and robotic total station methods in support of utility and facilities work. Produce and update CAD-based utility and site drawings using MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Coordinate with project managers, resident engineers, contractors, and government clients on utility information, dig permits, and related design activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience preparing UG/OH utility drawings for dig permits and supporting construction activities
  • Hands-on experience maintaining utility/GIS databases and mapping underground utilities (Esri ArcGIS, Bentley Map, AutoCAD Civil 3D)
  • Field experience with GPR, concrete scanners, magnetometers, MetroTech, or similar locating tools
  • Experience with land/construction surveying using conventional and GPS methods, including robotic total station
  • Proficiency with CAD tools used for utility/site mapping (MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D)
  • Solid knowledge of land and construction surveying practices and ability to interpret record maps and as-builts
  • Experience mapping contours, buildings, utilities, and site features with Bentley Map and related platforms
  • Ability to work effectively with engineers, designers, drafters, field staff, and government clients
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to perform both office and field work
  • Ability to lift instruments up to about 40 lbs
  • Ability to work on active construction sites/rough terrain
  • AS/AA in surveying, GIS, civil engineering technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency with Bentley Map, MicroStation, InRoads, and AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Coursework/training in mapping, GIS, or geospatial technologies
  • LSIT or progress toward professional land surveyor licensure
  • LSIT or survey/GIS coursework a plus
