Geotechnical / Permafrost Engineer

Job Summary

Plan and execute geotechnical and permafrost site investigations, analyze field and laboratory data, and prepare engineering analyses and design recommendations. Conduct thermal and geohazard assessments for infrastructure in cold regions, developing foundation and earth structure recommendations for northern projects. Coordinate drilling programs, perform site inspections, and provide construction monitoring and quality assurance services. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support project planning, budgeting, and client communication while mentoring junior staff. Travel periodically to remote locations in Western and Northern Canada. Requires a P.Eng. and six years of geotechnical experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligible for registration within a reasonable timeframe
  • 6 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience
  • Experience conducting and interpreting geotechnical investigations
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Experience working with drilling contractors and managing field programs
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites
  • Must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree specializing in Geotechnical Engineering and/or Cold Regions Engineering
  • Experience with permafrost investigations and cold regions engineering
  • Familiarity with northern infrastructure projects in Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba
  • Knowledge of thermal monitoring systems, thermistor installations, and permafrost instrumentation
  • Experience assessing thaw settlement, frost heave, and permafrost-related geohazards
  • Understanding of climate resilience and adaptation measures for northern infrastructure
  • Experience using geotechnical software for settlement, slope stability, and thermal analyses
  • Project management and client-facing experience
