Generalist Medical Lab Scientist

Job Summary
Perform various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study, and treatment of disease. Operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot malfunctions, and maintain instruments as required. Prepare reagents, order supplies, and execute quality control to evaluate specimen validity and test results. Identify critical values, confirm findings, and refer abnormal results to pathologists. Maintain accurate documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results while ensuring a safe, clean work environment. May perform venipuncture, obtain blood specimens, and assist in staff education. Works 6:30pm to 7am on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a chemical, physical or biological science
- Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP, MT (AMT), MT (HHS or HEW), MT (AAB), generalist or categorical if applicable
- Certification must be obtained within 18 months of cumulative employment as a medical technologist
- Lifting 50 lbs max
- Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs
- Occasional to frequent standing & walking
- Occasional sitting
- Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing)
- Shift work
- Travel may be required
Desired Qualifications
- Experience preferred but not required
- Experience with standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests
- Experience with preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and calibrating equipment
- Experience operating laboratory equipment and troubleshooting equipment and instrument malfunctions
- Experience assisting in implementation of new equipment and procedures
- Experience preparing reagents
- Experience with ordering and inventorying lab supplies
- Experience with quality control
- Experience evaluating the validity of acceptable specimens and test results
- Experience identifying critical values, confirming and reporting following standard operating procedures
- Experience evaluating all information and determining whether test results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist
- Experience referring abnormal or unexpected results to the appropriate individual(s)
- Experience maintaining accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results
- Experience documenting corrective actions taken for out of range test values
- Experience maintaining a clean, orderly and safe work area
- Experience complying with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures
- Experience performing required calculation and reporting results by phone and/or computer
- Experience auditing computer reports to ensure that scheduled tests have been completed
- Experience assisting in gathering data to monitor quality improvement standards and in preparing reports
- Experience with venipuncture or capillary puncture to obtain blood specimen
- Experience assisting in staff and student education by demonstrating procedures and by assisting in staff continuing education activities
- Attending educational in-services
- Maintaining certification as required
- Working with leader to formulate plan for professional development
- Participating in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments
