Job Summary
Clean and maintain commercial streets, sidewalks, and public parks by collecting litter, debris, and refuse. Perform municipal waste collection operations, grounds maintenance including pruning and mulching, and street repairs such as asphalt/concrete work, storm drain maintenance, and snow/ice removal. Operate vehicles and equipment safely while loading/unloading materials and assisting with building maintenance and custodial duties. Adhere to safety policies, communicate with the public, and respond to on-call requests for snow removal or emergencies. Work full-time Monday through Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm, with weekend availability as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be able to provide proof of the legal right to work in the United States
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Must pass a background check
- Must have a positive driving record
- Ability to lift or carry weight of 75 pounds without assistance
- Ability to push/pull objects up to 150 pounds
- Ability to bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist
- Ability to perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation
- Ability to work in various weather conditions
- Ability to work in a field environment with noise, chemicals, electrical energy or radiant energy, odors, vibrations, poor lighting, in hazardous areas, slippery uneven surfaces and in/around moving machinery and vehicles
- Ability to report for work during natural/manmade disasters
- Ability to report or remain at work when other City employees are granted administrative leave
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to strictly adhere to deadlines
- Ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment related to public works maintenance
- Ability to work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and respective manner
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain accurate Public Works records
- Ability to be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation and communication
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and residents
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and represent the City of Mount Rainier
- Ability to observe and maintain established safety policies and procedures and take appropriate safety precautions during the course of performing daily tasks
- Ability to load and unload heavy materials from trucks
- Ability to aid in moving boxes and equipment
- Ability to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Ability to direct traffic when necessary to ensure safety of pedestrians, motorists and work crew
- Ability to perform manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Public Works Department
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, and as needed on weekends
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Desired Qualifications
- Spanish fluency
- Two years of waste management experience
- Two years of municipal public works experience including street, facilities, landscape, and vehicle maintenance
