Job Summary
Serve as We Are CASA's primary in-house legal adviser on all matters affecting organizational operations, governance, and strategic initiatives. Oversee organizational protection and defense work, ensuring compliance protocols are developed, implemented, and monitored across all departments. Partner with People & Culture to advise on union relations, employment law, personnel policies, and internal workplace investigations. Lead organization-wide legal compliance initiatives, including policy creation, staff trainings, and monitoring changes in laws affecting immigrant rights, elections, and privacy. Manage actual, threatened, and potential litigation, establishing document preservation efforts and responding to subpoenas and government inquiries. Advise the Board on governance matters, draft and review contracts, and lead legal reviews of organizational policies.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. degree
- Minimum of 8 years legal experience
- Active membership in good standing with the Maryland State Bar
- Valid US Driver's License
- Own transportation
- Civil litigation experience
- Experience in nonprofit organizations
- Labor and employment law experience
- Governance experience
- Workers' and immigrants' rights experience
- Experience working with immigrant communities
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Conflict resolution skills
- Negotiation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously
Desired Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience preferred
- Ideally including experience in one or more of the legal areas where We Are CASA works
- Bilingual English/Spanish
