Job Summary
Build and lead Vapi's legal function from scratch as General Counsel; own legal strategy across the company and serve as strategic partner to the CEO, leadership team, and board. Hands-on operator who writes contracts, ships policy, and stays close to product. Navigate regulatory complexity in voice AI, including consent, telecom regulation, and AI-specific rules across state, national, and international regimes. Drive commercial contracting (MSAs/DPAs/BAAs), vendor and为 partner agreements, procurement, and scalable self-service contracting paths; own privacy program (GDPR/CPRA, HIPAA), data protection, and compliance; manage corporate matters (board governance, equity administration, 409A, financings, and potential M&A), and oversee IP, employment law, and outside counsel relationships. Collaborate with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Security, and regulators; communicate risk and strategy to executives and investors; help define markets and product strategy while maintaining an engineering-first, customer-obsessed culture.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. from a top law school and active bar membership (California preferred)
- 8+ years of relevant experience including strong foundation at a top-tier law firm and meaningful in-house time at a high-growth technology company
- Experience as GC, Head of Legal, or senior in-house lead is a strong plus
- Deep commercial contracting chops with enterprise SaaS or infrastructure customers; negotiation of large MSAs, DPAs, and BAAs
- Working fluency in TCPA / telecom regulation, AI regulation (Colorado AI Act, EU AI Act), biometric privacy (BIPA), HIPAA, or content/IP issues specific to generative AI
- Ability to read API specs, system diagrams, or security architecture; comfortable collaborating with engineers and product teams
- Bias to action; ability to draft, ship, and iterate policies
- Excellent judgment under uncertainty; comfortable making calls and owning them
- Clear, plainspoken communication with executives, customers, and regulators alike
- Bonus points: prior experience as first/sole GC at a Series A–C company; background in comms/CPaaS/voice/contact-center or AI platform companies; hands-on SOC 2 Type II, HITRUST, or ISO 27001 in a legal capacity; international data-protection experience (EU/UK/Canada/LATAM)
