Job Summary

General Cashier at Fairmont The Norfolk in Nairobi is responsible for end-to-end cash handling within the hotel’s Finance & Accounting functions. Key duties include collecting remittance envelopes with witnesses from Front Office Clerks’ and Food & Beverage Clerks’, counting cash, cheques, and credit card vouchers, preparing bank deposits, reconciling with computerized remittance reports, updating daily transaction details by Credit Card Company, obtaining and updating daily foreign exchange rates, disbursing petty cash with required approvals, maintaining house banks, preparing daily and periodic financial reports, ensuring compliance with local laws for cash and foreign exchange control, and assisting in training Heartists. The role requires the ability to adapt to rotate within the Accounting & Finance Department or other hotel departments, supervision of cash handling processes, and collaboration with payroll and external outsourcing for withholdings. A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field and at least 2 years of cashier experience (preferably in hospitality) are required, along with proficiency in POS and financial tools, strong numerical and analytical skills, attention to detail, English communication skills, and flexibility to work shifts including weekends/holidays. Physical duties include standing, walking, and occasional stairs; the role emphasizes integrity and trustworthiness in financial transactions and familiarity with foreign currency exchange processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a cashier, preferably in a hotel or hospitality setting
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including POS software and financial management tools
  • Strong mathematical skills and ability to handle large sums of money accurately
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of financial regulations and cash handling procedures
  • Outstanding customer service skills with a focus on satisfaction
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Familiarity with foreign currency exchange processes
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays if required
