Job Summary
Deliver high school equivalency instruction in Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies to students in the Individual Student Alternative Education Plan and jail education program. Adapt GED content and instructional methods to create sequential assignments, develop weekly lesson plans, and administer diagnostic assessments and GED Ready practice tests. Provide differentiated instruction and small-group support to adult learners, establish student conduct standards, and maintain accurate records of attendance, assessment data, and progress reports. Collaborate with parents, counselors, administrators, and correctional-facility staff to address academic, behavioral, and special education needs while ensuring compliance with IDEA, FERPA, and security protocols. Prepare eligible students for the four GED subtests and career-readiness experiences within a secure classroom environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Adult Education, or a related field
- Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Provisional, Collegiate Professional, or Postgraduate Professional License with an appropriate teaching endorsement
- Special education personnel with any special education endorsement, except early childhood special education, may provide instructional services to eligible students with disabilities incarcerated in a regional or local jail
- Must successfully complete all required background checks, screenings, training, and correctional-facility clearance requirements
- Minimum of three (3) years of successful, full-time teaching experience preferred
- Experience teaching secondary students, adult learners, alternative education students, or justice-involved learners preferred
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public
- Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, sound judgment, and strict compliance with safety and security procedures
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of GED preparation, adult-learning principles, differentiated instruction, assessment, and data-informed intervention preferred
