Job Summary
Manage daily garden sections by planting, weeding, pruning, and maintaining irrigation systems while ensuring high aesthetic standards for public enjoyment. Operate mechanical and non-mechanical tools including tractors, chain saws, and wheelbarrows to perform soil preparation, mulching, and pest control. Assist with grounds maintenance such as trail upkeep, brush chipping, and compost pile turning, while installing and repairing irrigation equipment. Lead volunteer crews during staff days and train visitors on safe gardening tasks. Maintain tool inventories, ensure equipment safety, and respond to on-call rotations covering holidays and sick days. This full-time role supports the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's mission as a museum-curated living collection, requiring physical stamina and knowledge of California plant cultivation.
Required Qualifications
- Two years of applied work experience in garden maintenance
- Must manage their time and work under pressure to meet deadlines and priorities
- Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods of time
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to bend, squat, and walk the Garden trails
- Tolerance of an outdoor work environment including exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, including: extreme temperature fluctuations, rain, dust, allergens, poison oak, insects, small wild animals, and sun exposure
- Ability to perform physically strenuous work assignments on a regular basis, 8 hours a day
- Must have valid California driver license
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of California plants and their cultivation
- College coursework in horticulture, ecology, wildlife science, and/or habitat restoration
- Experience with ornamental garden techniques and standards
