Job Summary
Part-time Garden Field Hand assists the Farm & Garden Manager and Supervisor in crop production and operation, including harvesting and washing/packing twice weekly, composting, bed preparation, soil cultivation, irrigation, nursery management, weekly sowings, tractor work, and supporting the production of value-added products such as fermented foods and herbal medicines. Responsibilities also include land stewardship (weed whacking, lawn mowing), basic maintenance, and leading/directing crews of 2–8 people with varied experience, including volunteers and residential students in a 1–3 month program. The role requires clear, authentic communication and ability to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds, plus willingness to learn Esalen communication skills using Gestalt-style check-ins.
Required Qualifications
- At least 6 months experience working in a production garden or equivalent training
- Experience overseeing and directing work crews
- Understanding of sustainable gardening principles and practices including soil health and fertility, irrigation systems, composting techniques, pest control, weed control
- Working knowledge of organic crop production (vegetables, flowers, herbs) and native/perennial crops
- Knowledge of creating and cultivating value added products such as fermented foods and herbal medicines
- Skilled in clear and authentic communication, including ability to share in and support personal sharing circles
- Ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to safely lead and participate in physically demanding work on uneven terrain
- Experience in and/or willingness to learn Esalen communication skills using methods such as daily Gestalt style check-ins
