Job Summary

Implement instructional plans and programs for assigned students under the direction of special education teachers, assisting during individual, small group, or whole class instruction. Adapt classroom materials to meet student needs, prepare instructional resources, and assist with technology use. Supervise students in and out of the building, including field trips and community activities, while providing support for daily tasks and time management. Collect data for behavior management plans, provide feedback on student progress, and attend student team meetings. Direct all student communication to the special educator and maintain confidentiality. Maintain safety protocols during drills and emergencies. This role supports students in a specially designed program that includes academic, social, and daily life activities, with experience working with teens with unique needs essential.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a high school diploma
  • One year of directly related experience
  • One year of directly relevant experience in a school setting
  • Good working knowledge of children
  • Good understanding of standard classroom operations and teaching methods
  • Strong reading, writing, and math skills
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of the subject matter being taught to students
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write and correspond
  • Ability to speak effectively
  • Good basic computer skills
  • Experience with word processing programs
  • Proficiency with Google Mail or similar email
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with various individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies
  • Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress
  • A willingness to attend required or requested training, meetings, and professional growth activities outside of school hours
  • Ability to remain calm and follow protocols in responding to emergencies
  • Ability to assist students physically as required
