Job Summary
Conduct safe and efficient train operations by adhering to FRA, AAR, and company rules while performing railcar switching, coupling, uncoupling, and routing traffic. Receive instructions from dispatchers and train crews, communicate via radios and hand signals, and inspect train equipment for repairs. Complete paperwork for car movements and maintain records to ensure proper billing. This safety-sensitive position requires a valid driver's license, >95% travel, and irregular shifts including nights and weekends exceeding 40 hours. Work outdoors in all weather conditions with frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. Membership in the collective bargaining agreement is required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Valid driver's license
- Membership in a collective bargaining agreement
- Vision, color, and hearing acuity as specified in FRA regulations
- Regular and timely attendance at work
- Ability to report to work safely on as close to two-hour notice as possible
- Ability to work nights and weekends
- Ability to work overtime
- Ability to work nonstandard workweek
- Ability to work shifts exceeding 40 hours per week
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
- Ability to work under time pressure to meet strict deadlines
- Ability to work with frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and 85 pounds occasionally
- Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain and on elevated surfaces and slopes
- Ability to ascend and descend steps and ladders to get on and off equipment
- Ability to wear Common Protective or Safety Equipment such as Safety Shoes, Glasses, Gloves, Hearing Protection, Hard Hats, or Life Jackets
- Ability to work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
- Ability to understand and adhere to operating rules, safety rules, policies, procedures and regulations
- Ability to ensure train crew's compliance with all train orders, signals, rules and regulations
- Ability to receive and comprehend instructions, bulletins, work orders, and switch lists from dispatchers and Trainmaster
- Ability to communicate with engineer, dispatcher, and other workers using telecommunications equipment/radios and hand signals
- Ability to observe, understand, and act upon the indications of color light signals and signs
- Ability to complete paperwork of car movements and keep records of the contents and destination of each train car
