Founding Hardware Engineer (Synthesis)
$130,000–$190,000 year
On-siteSan Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Design and develop automated peptide synthesis systems for high-throughput solid-phase peptide synthesis, engineering comprehensive fluidic architectures and advanced reaction modules. Create robust control systems to manage timed reagent addition, flow rates, and pressure while implementing automated recovery for faults. Prototype, test, and troubleshoot electromechanical systems including pumps, sensors, and embedded controllers, then assess hardware performance against chemical outputs like purity and yield. Collaborate with chemists to translate synthesis failure modes into hardware improvements and develop test protocols for subsystems. Integrate the synthesizer with analytical workflows such as HPLC and LC-MS to drive efforts toward faster, more reproducible peptide synthesis with minimal manual intervention.
