Job Summary
Formation Process Engineer role focused on leading development, optimization, and mass-production support of lithium-ion battery formation and capacity grading for consumer electronics. Responsibilities include designing and validating formation recipes, establishing capacity grading specs, identifying root causes of formation/grading anomalies (e.g., low capacity, high impedance, lithium plating), applying DOE/SPC/FMEA to reduce variation, transferring processes from R&D to production, coordinating with QA/QE on inspection standards, optimizing line takt time and OEE, enabling automation and MES data integration, and collaborating with cycler suppliers. Required experience with formation and capacity grading, DOE/SPC/FMEA, and familiarity with major cycler platforms; bachelor's degree in a related field; strong data analysis and cross-functional communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years hands-on experience in lithium-ion battery formation and capacity grading processes; background in consumer battery mass production strongly preferred
- Bachelor's degree or above in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related field (Master's preferred)
- Proficiency in DOE, SPC, FMEA, and Six Sigma methodologies; Green Belt or Black Belt certification is a plus
- Familiarity with major formation cycler platforms (e.g., Neware, Landt, Arbin, Basytec) and their programming logic; ability to troubleshoot equipment faults
- Proficiency in electrochemical testing techniques: EIS, DCIR, self-discharge, and battery analysis software (BTS, Arbin, etc.)
- Skilled in JMP, Minitab, Python, or Excel for large-scale data analysis and visualization
- Strong cross-functional communication skills; ability to author technical reports and engage in technical discussions with customers
