Formation Process Engineer - 3C Battery
On-site · Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea
Job Summary
Formation Process Engineer role focusing on the development, optimization, and mass-production support of formation and grading processes for silicon-based power cells. Responsibilities include leading formation protocol development (pre-formation, standard formation, step-charge), designing and validating formation recipes (charge/discharge C-rates, temperature windows, cutoff conditions), establishing capacity grading specifications, developing programs for high-rate requirements, accounting for silicon-anode expansion to minimize stress and SEI instability, collaborating with R&D/electrode teams to correlate formation with first-cycle efficiency and long-term stability, identifying root causes of anomalies and implementing CAPA, applying DOE/SPC/FMEA to reduce variation, partnering with QA/QE for inspection standards, optimizing line takt time and energy use, driving transfers from lab to pilot to mass production, maintaining PM plans for formation equipment, coordinating with cycler suppliers, and leading FAT/SAT acceptance testing and OQ/PQ qualification. The ideal candidate has 3+ years in formation and grading, experience with silicon anodes, participation in an NPI/mass ramp-up, strong electrochemical testing and data analysis skills, and a bachelor’s or higher degree in relevant fields.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in lithium-ion battery formation and grading processes
- Experience with silicon anode or high-energy-density cell formation preferred
- Led or substantially contributed to at least one full NPI or mass production ramp-up project
- Deep understanding of formation fundamentals: SEI formation, gas evolution, lithium deposition suppression, and electrolyte decomposition
- Familiar with major formation cycler platforms (Neware, Landt, Arbin, Basytec) and ability to independently troubleshoot equipment faults
- Proficient in electrochemical testing: EIS, DCIR, self-discharge, and battery analysis software
- Proficient in DOE, SPC, FMEA, and data analysis tools (JMP, Minitab, Python, or Excel)
- Experience with MES/ERP data extraction and visualization
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or related field; Master's preferred
- Experience with Si anode formation protocol development or high-rate power cell formation (preferred)
- Familiar with consumer battery safety standards (IEC 62133, UL 1642, UN 38.3) (preferred)
