Job Summary
District Foresters work one-on-one with private forest owners to help them understand resource value and develop management plans, including inventory data, timber stand improvement, invasive species control, tree planting, and prescribed burns. They provide technical assistance for federal incentive programs, establish public relations with landowners and communities, develop educational materials, and may supervise intermittent staff. The role requires knowledge of forest resources management and GIS, fire behavior/suppression, program administration, and strong communication and organizational skills. Required within the first year: Indiana driver’s license and pesticide applicator license; ability to complete basic wildfire and prescribed burning coursework within 2 years. A degree is not required.
Required Qualifications
- Indiana driver’s license (must obtain/retain)
- Pesticide applicator license and appropriate category within the first year of employment
- Ability to supervise intermittent employees/volunteers
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
- Ability to organize and prioritize work
- Basic wildfire courses (red card) and prescribed burning course within 2 years of employment or ability to complete
- Degree not required
