Job Summary
Forester/UVM Technician role supporting California forestry projects under Forest Practice Rules. Responsibilities include developing treatment plans for fuel reduction and forest management under supervision of an RPF; assisting with forest management assessments and CEQA documentation; overseeing defensible-space and timber-harvest projects in the field; conducting field surveys (timber cruising, biology, nesting birds, archaeology) and ensuring CEQA/Forest Practice compliance; coordinating with clients, project managers, planners, and vegetation crews; collecting data with handheld devices and GPS; maintaining safe, organized worksites; and traveling up to 75% to sites across the West. Requires formal forestry degree, field-skill proficiency, strong communication, and ability to work outdoors in challenging conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Possession of an A.S., B.S., or M.S. in Forestry, Forest Ecology, Wildland Fire Science/Ecology, Forest and Natural Resource Management
- Career path to become a Registered Professional Forester in California
- Basic forestry skills and knowledge (timber marking, mensuration, forest management, silviculture, timber harvest planning)
- Knowledge of physical ecosystem attributes (geology, topography, soils, watershed functions, hydrology, water quality)
- Clean DMV driving record and ability to drive and operate a 4x4 vehicle on rough roads
- Outdoor and independent work environment suitability
- Ability to travel up to 50% of the time (to projects throughout the West)
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work safely in varied outdoor conditions
- Willingness to adapt and learn
- Desire to work with project managers, planners, and vegetation crews
- ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ (desired)
- Experience with CEQA and Forest Practice Rules compliance
- Experience with field surveys (timber cruising, biological surveys, nesting bird surveys, archaeological surveys)
- Experience with defensible space projects and coordinating with clients and contractors
