Job Summary
Operate and maintain heavy equipment (bulldozer, motor grader, excavator) for wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, prescribed burning, and forestation; haul equipment with a low boy trailer; perform minor repairs and assist district mechanic with major repairs; may assist with information and education programs and other forest-management tasks; respond during emergencies and join incident management teams as assigned; hours typically 8-5 M-F with extended readiness and after-hours support during fire danger periods; overnight travel required; residency in NC discussed during interview; pre-employment drug testing; CDL requirements and USDOT medical certification are required; multiple procedures including drug testing and medical clearance; emphasis on safety, team-work, and ability to work independently or as part of a team. The position is with the North Carolina Forest Service within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the recruitment range is $35,984 - $62,971 with potential adjustments based on education and experience.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of heavy equipment operation experience
- Possession of a North Carolina Commercial Driver's License on hire date or permit and obtain within 90 days
- Completion of NC FFEO training schedule within two years of hire
- Drug screening and Medical Certificate as condition of employment
- CDL preferred or required for position-related duties
