Job Summary
The Assistant Cafeteria Manager is directly involved in food production and serving, and performs many of the same tasks as Food Service Workers, but is frequently assigned cashier duties as a primary assignment and the role of serving as manager in the manager’s absence. General duties include cash handling (collecting money, ringing sales, making change), preparing and serving items (salads, meats, vegetables, pizza, sandwiches, desserts, beverages), preparing entrees and wraps, replenishing serving stations, operating kitchen equipment (oven, grill, deep-fat fryer, industrial dishwasher), cleaning tasks, and supporting food service operations as needed. The role may involve acting as School Food Service Manager as required, supervising under the Food Service Manager and School Administrator, and ensuring safety standards, temperature control, and timely food preparation for student lunches. Work conditions may include lifting up to 35 pounds and exposure to hot kitchens, walk-in freezers, and loud environments. This is a 190-day contract position based in Hopewell, VA.
Required Qualifications
- high school diploma or GED
- Safe Serv food-handler’s license
- previous school nutrition experience
- ability to supervise and manage food service operations
- ability to follow written and oral instructions in English
- understand and retain training in food preparation guidelines
- ability to interact and communicate effectively with youth
