Job Summary
Fisheries Technician 2 duties include operating and maintaining hatchery equipment and grounds, managing day-to-day hatchery operations, and ensuring safe transport and release of hatchery-reared fish across Nova Scotia. Responsibilities cover fish culture activities (brood stock development, spawning, egg incubation, and nutrition), implementation of feed schedules, monitoring water quality and fish health, administering medications, and reporting outcomes. The role provides technical support to conservation organizations and staff, contributes to field work, creel surveys, and participates in public education and extension programs. Candidates should have strong analytical and communication skills, experience with equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, and electrofishing gear, and the ability to train entry-level employees and collaborate with colleagues and external partners.
Required Qualifications
- College diploma or relevant post-secondary training and 2 years related experience
- Experience in hatchery operation and fish production
- Knowledge of fish culture techniques and fish health protocols
- Safety practices related to hatchery operation and field work
- First aid/CPR and WHMIS is required
