Job Summary
Firefighter role in the City of Jackson responsible for protecting life and property through firefighting, emergency medical services, and code enforcement support. Duties include combating and extinguishing fires, providing lifesaving EMS, assisting with inspections, training, and maintenance of PPE/equipment. Ability to act as Fire Lieutenant and/or incident commander; work on a 24-hour shift schedule including weekends/nights/holidays; must meet physical demands and grooming standards. Requires Michigan Firefighter I/II certification, EMT-B licensure, high school diploma or GED, and valid MI driver's license; includes physical tests (CPAT/written) and background checks. Preferred advanced fire-related education or experience, and residency within 40 miles of Jackson after one year.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalency
- State of Michigan Firefighter I and II certification at time of application and hire
- Current Michigan EMT-B licensure at time of hire
- Valid Michigan driver’s license
- Aptitude for mechanical work; some experience with mechanics
- Ability to perform firefighting tasks in extreme conditions while wearing PPE
- Ability to learn locations of hydrants and streets in the City of Jackson
- Ability to present to groups of children and/or adults
- Successful completion of post-offer physical exam and drug screen
- Favorable employment and police background check
- Preference for Associate Degree in Fire Science or related experience
