Job Summary

Fire Mitigation Engineer III/Senior provides advanced engineering leadership to develop and implement wildfire and fire mitigation strategies for an electric utility. The role applies in-depth knowledge of fire mitigation, system protection, engineering standards, risk-based decision making, and device deployment to enhance safety, reliability, and resilience. The engineer serves as a subject-matter expert, guiding complex engineering challenges, mentoring others, supporting regulatory and compliance initiatives, and interfacing with external agencies as needed. The position may require shift work and occasional overnight travel and is described as a hybrid role with in-person work about 40% of the time at APS or another location. Education and licensure requirements include a four-year engineering degree and Professional Engineer licensure; candidates should have strong problem-solving skills and utility-industry experience. Hybrid: employees in hybrid roles work both from home and in-person, with ~40% in-person at an APS or other location; residence expected in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related applied science discipline from ABET-accredited institution or IEA-recognized institution or ABET MRA
  • Eight (8) years of engineering-related experience for Engineer III (Five (5) years minimum for Engineer III) or Senior Engineer level requires similar experience
  • Professional Engineer licensure preferred
  • Knowledge of fire mitigation, codes, standards, safety practices; experience in utility industry; ability to lead and mentor engineers; strong analytical and project-management skills
  • Experience planning and coordinating large-scale engineering projects; ability to interface with regulators and management; familiarity with R&D and technology evaluation
  • Ability to develop complex engineering plans, analyses, cost estimates, and technical reviews
