Job Summary

Oversee inspections, plan reviews, and enforcement of life-safety and fire codes. Investigate complaints regarding code violations and interpret codes for staff and customers. Issue permits for events using combustible materials and witness final tests of fire suppression systems. Inspect new and existing buildings, calculate occupant load certificates, and conduct after-hours monitoring of assembly occupancies. Meet with architects, engineers, developers, and property owners to review plans and address inquiries. Create reports, memoranda, and incident documents while assisting with budget items and monitoring fireworks permits. Provide public fire safety education and ensure required fire service features are submitted for review. Work involves local travel, outdoor duties, and potential overtime, weekends, and holidays. Requires a valid driver's license and NFPA Certified Fire Plans Examiner certification.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • NFPA Certified Fire Plans Examiner (CFPE)
  • Five (5) years of experience in fire prevention codes enforcement
  • equivalent education, and/or experience
  • valid driver's license
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in the suppression of fires and in the delivery of emergency medical services
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety codes
  • Knowledge of building construction, plumbing, fire alarm and suppression systems, and fire extinguishers
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including the use of computers, scanners, spreadsheet and database software
  • Knowledge of city personnel policy
  • Skill in the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and guidelines
  • Skill in the operation of fire apparatus and in the delivery of emergency medical services
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, and GIS
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety

  • willing to report and/or act on safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
  • Must be available and willing to work according to the assigned schedule
  • Willing to work overtime, weekends on call and holidays, and may be required to assist in special events
