Job Summary
The Financial Counselor I role assists patients with understanding and managing financial aspects of healthcare services, including onboarding into financial assistance programs, interpreting insurance coverage and options, and communicating financial responsibilities. Responsibilities include providing pricing estimates, reviewing accounts for outstanding balances, verifying insurance benefits, explaining EOB statements, collecting and documenting demographic and insurance information, managing work queues related to financial assistance and estimates, guiding patients through financial assistance applications and payment plans, handling inquiries from patients and payers, delivering high-quality customer service, collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve account issues, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and applicable regulations, and participating in ongoing training. Required skills include strong customer service, communication, data entry, attention to detail, ability to analyze data, critical thinking, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; preferred qualifications include an Associate’s degree and healthcare-financial-services experience.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 0–2 years of relevant experience
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong communication, customer service, and active listening skills
- Basic keyboarding and data entry skills
- Ability to analyze and interpret data
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and sound judgment
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, complex environment
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
