Job Summary
Answer billing questions, review patient insurance coverage and Explanation of Benefits, and clarify charges incurred. Explain insurance denials, payment plan guidelines, and assistance program eligibility to patients. Educate individuals on insurance concepts, copayments, coverage effective dates, referrals, and claim resubmission processes. Calculate cost estimates for procedures, collect prepayments for uncovered services, and assist with medical assistance program paperwork. Interact with patients in-person to empathize and diffuse strong emotions while addressing outstanding medical costs. Requires knowledge of third-party payers, bookkeeping principles, and advanced computer skills to operate on-line systems.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of third party payers
- Basic bookkeeping or accounting principles
- Thorough understanding of insurance products
- Ability to accurately read an EOB to determine what adjustments have been made, what payments have been received, and calculate pending balances
Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Post-secondary education
- Two years' experience in healthcare service or health insurance
