Financial Counselor

Job Summary
Gather and input patient demographic and financial information, explain necessary forms, and obtain signatures from patients and guarantors. Contact insurance payers to verify benefits, obtain authorizations, and resolve pending or denied accounts. Screen patients for federal, state, or county assistance programs, collect co-pays and deductibles, and establish payment arrangements. Process Medical Assistance applications, work with County Assistance offices, and maintain departmental logs for statistical reporting. Cross-train to staff multiple areas including pre-registration, scheduling, and cashiering, while participating in training new team members. Collaborate with nursing, case management, and physicians to meet quality assurance standards and departmental collection goals.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Two (2) years' experience in a financial, business office, or customer service environment
- One year hospital business office experience
- Demonstrated computer skills (including Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Working Knowledge of ICD9 coding and medical terminology
- Able to work with minimal supervision
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work effectively with all payor and hospital personnel
