Financial Aid Counselor

Job Summary
Serves as primary point of contact for current and prospective students, counseling them on financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, and indebtedness. Oversees packaging of federal grants, loans, and work-study while conducting verification reviews and ensuring student aid awards remain accurate. Assists students with estimating educational expenses and preparing financial plans, notifying them of eligibility changes or amendment alternatives. Ensures compliance with all financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations when reviewing applications, exercising judgment in interpreting Federal and State regulations. Supports the Director of Financial Aid in departmental reviews and reports, applying knowledge of Federal Title IV awards, FERPA, and Title IV regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in an area with focus in finance, or counseling
- 1-3 years financial aid experience
- equivalent combination of education and experience
- Exceptional customer service orientation
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to communicate sensitive and/or complex information in a confidential and straightforward manner
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office
- experienced in financial database systems

- ability to handle a heavy workload
- Familiarity with academic environment, policies and procedures
- Excellent organizational skills
