Job Summary

Lead the annual budget process, prepare monthly reports for the National Political Committee, and oversee accounting operations including financial statements and the general ledger. Develop new metrics for cash flow forecasting and reserve monitoring while designing internal controls across cash handling and payment processing. Supervise finance staff, manage DSA's Grants program, administer payroll, and oversee year-end audit activities and tax filings. Support chapter treasurers with training and ensure all financial practices comply with GAAP and 501(c)(4) requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years in finance leadership, with the majority of the time at a nonprofit, political organization, or union, with a record of increasing levels of responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles and practices, and net asset classification (restricted vs. unrestricted)
  • Experience with accounting/ERP or related software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Xero, Bill.com, Concur, or similar) and PEO and/or payroll systems; strong excel skills
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing a team, including developing and retaining staff and project-managing work competing workstreams
  • High level of accountability, responsibility, and dependability, comfort in a in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Track record of designing or maintaining internal controls
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to process, procedures, and documentation
  • Commitment to democratic socialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-heterosexist and pro-worker action and identify as a socialist and be grounded in democratic socialist politics; general agreement with the positions and perspectives of YDSA and DSA

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of tax requirements by state preferred
  • Prior work in a 501c4 or managing chapter/affiliate organizations preferred, but not required
  • Preferred: Located in the NYC tri-state area with the ability to come into the national office on occasion
  • Preferred: CPA or equivalent credential
  • Prior experience with grant compliance and Single Audit requirements
  • Prior work in a 501(c)(4) or with chapter/affiliate organizational structures
  • Knowledge of multi-state tax and payroll requirements
